A straight-chain analogue of alpha-MSH, the hormone that tells skin cells to make melanin. It stimulates eumelanin — the protective brown-black pigment — through the MC1 receptor, producing a tan without UV exposure and increasing the skin's own photoprotection. It is highly selective for that receptor, so it tans without the appetite and libido effects of Melanotan-2. The prescription form, afamelanotide, is approved for erythropoietic protoporphyria, a rare condition in which sunlight causes severe pain.
