A four-amino-acid peptide that concentrates in the inner membrane of mitochondria, where it binds cardiolipin — the lipid that holds the energy-producing machinery in shape. By stabilising that structure it restores ATP production and cuts the leakage of damaging free radicals. It is approved as elamipretide (Forzinity) for Barth syndrome, a mitochondrial disease, and is studied for heart failure, mitochondrial myopathy, dry macular degeneration and the loss of muscle function with age.
