The only human cathelicidin, a thirty-seven-amino-acid antimicrobial peptide produced by immune cells and the skin as a first line of defence. It punches holes in the membranes of bacteria, fungi and some viruses, and is effective against biofilms that resist conventional antibiotics. Beyond killing microbes it recruits immune cells, promotes new blood-vessel growth and drives skin cells to close over wounds. It is studied for chronic wounds, infection resistance and immune modulation.
