A tripeptide of glutamate, cysteine and glycine, and the body's principal antioxidant inside cells. It neutralises reactive oxygen species directly, regenerates vitamins C and E so they can work again, and binds to toxins in the liver's phase-two detoxification so they can be excreted. Levels fall with age, illness and oxidative stress. It is used and studied for antioxidant support, liver protection, immune function and skin brightening, where it inhibits the enzyme that makes melanin.
